Randy Jackson Returns To 'American Idol' In New Twist

Randy Jackson may be out as a judge, but he will be part of the new season of "American Idol" (FOX). According to FOX, Jackson has stepped into a new role where he will mentor contestants. "There's a new role for Randy this year, it's a sort of Randy Jackson workshop," executive producer Trish Kinane revealed Monday via THR. "Randy is going to be hosting a two-day workshop where the kids who got through to the live show have an education, if you like, in song choices, personal style and other things." As previously reported, Jackson announced that he would retire from judging on the show last Spring. Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj followed him in exiting the series. Jackson was the last original "American Idol" judge standing. Wednesday's premiere of 'Idol" will feature new and returning judges Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick Jr. "American Idol" premieres Wednesday night at 8 p.m. on FOX.
